Have you Talked to your Doctor about your Back Pain?

Do you suffer from back pain? Have you gone to see your Doctor about your back pain?  If you answered “no” you are like a lot of people! Whatever the reason, there are a lot of us who put off going to the doctor until we can hardly drag ourselves into the doctor’s office because we’ve gotten into such a sorry state!

Should I get my mild back pain checked out?

It’s important to go see your doctor if you are feeling any back pain, even if it’s only mild pain.  Mild back pain needs to be taken seriously as it could be an indicator or sign of a more serious underlying problem or condition.

Early detection of any medical condition is crucial to being able to treat it effectively and quickly before it progresses. Besides, who wants to be in pain for longer than you need to be?  It never hurts to get your back pain checked out no matter how minor you think it is!

Take notes

Doctors make their diagnosis based largely on what we tell them.  So you need to make sure that you tell the doctor the accurate details of your back pain. A good idea would be to keep notes at home in preparation of your doctor appointment, targeting the key questions that your doctor may ask you.

Some general or key questions your doctor may ask you about your back pain are:

1. When did it start? Was there an activity or event that caused the onset of the pain?

2. When do you particularly notice the back pain? Is there a certain time of day or a certain activity (walking, sitting, bending etc.) that aggravates the pain?

3. What kind of pain are you experiencing? Is it dull, sharp, numbing, tingling, burning, radiating, in one place?

4. What kind of treatments have you tried?  Any over-the-counter or prescription pain medications? Any sciatica treatments? Home remedies?

Again it’s very important to give your doctor accurate and detailed information so that he/she can properly assess your condition.  Of course your doctor may choose to send you for medical imaging or other medical tests to confirm his diagnosis but if you are able to give good and accurate information up front it will speed up the diagnosis process and get you started on the right treatment track.
