Do You Know What The 4 Common Types of Back Pain Are?

Back pain is a very common issue these days.  Whether it’s an injury from a car accident, sport accident or fall, or if it is a symptom of a disease or medical condition, chances are you know more than one person who suffers from it and the fact that you are reading this article may indicate that you are a sufferer of back pain yourself!

Back pain comes from different causes, in varying degrees and with various symptoms.  We are going to talk about 4 common types of back pain.

Herniated disc back pain

A herniated disc is a disc that has ruptured or herniated and a portion of the inside of the disc has pushed out.  A herniated disc usually occurs from a sudden incident (as opposed to gradually) such as if you get injured in a motor vehicle accident, a fall, or if your body has suffered a violent twist or jolt.

Bulging disc back pain

Unlike a herniated disc, a bulging disc generally happens over a period of time. A bulging disc is a disc that is bulging out.  Age and genetics play a big role in whether you are susceptible to a bulging disc or not.  As we get older our discs can get dried out and shrink and this greatly increases your chance of getting a bulging disc.

Sciatica back pain

Sciatica is a symptom of an underlying problem such as a slipped, bulging or herniated disc.  When you have a problem with a disc, it can put pressure on your sciatic nerve and causes the sciatica back pain. Some of the symptoms you would experience from the symptom sciatica are: tingling or numbness in the legs or lower back, cramping or burning sensations or a lack of mobility.  Lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise and weight can affect the degree or intensity of the symptoms as well.

Spinal stenosis back pain

Spinal stenosis is generally limited to the older members of society.   As we age our spinal canal can narrow, causing pressure on the spinal cord and spinal nerve roots.  The symptoms of spinal stenosis can include radiating pain, weakness and numbness.  There are other possible causes of spinal stenosis such as disc problems, genetic diseases or even physical trauma. Eventually the spinal stenosis can severely limit your mobility and surgery may be required.

Get diagnosed

Your back pain may not be limited to these 4 common types as there are other types of back pain.  It is important, whether you think you know what type of pain you are experiencing or not, that you go to your doctor and get diagnosed.  Once you have had the necessary tests and have gotten a diagnosis, then you are armed with the information you need to pursue the appropriate treatment.

Your doctor will be able to give you suggestions for different treatments that may help you.  You may find that some treatments don’t work for you, or if they do work that they are only a temporary solution to your pain.

Think outside the box

Don’t limit yourself to conventional treatments; there are a lot of new alternative and holistic treatment options out there that may help you with your back pain.  However, ensure that you check with your doctor before pursuing any treatment option, whether conventional or unconventional.
