Given that many traumatic events stem from car accidents, many traumatic brain injuries stem from car accidents.
What is a coup-contrecoup brain injury?
This type of brain injury results when the brain bounces back and forth inside the skull. The injury to the brain results from the brain impacting the inside of the skull.
Whiplash-style injuries can cause a coup-contrecoup brain injury. In a whiplash event, the head whips back and forth rapidly causing the brain to crash into the inside of the skull.
Please note that not all incidents of whiplash result in a coup-contrecoup brain injury. In fact it’s the exception.
What are the symptoms of a coup-contrecoup brain injury?
It’s not possible to list all the different symptoms stemming from each type of brain injury. However, generally speaking, different brain injuries can result in different symptoms. Some common symptoms from a coup-contrecoup brain injury are as follows:
- Speech difficulty;
- Difficulty understanding language;
- Loss of memory;
- Compromised balance and coordination; and
- Weak muscles. In rare cases paralysis may result.
Please note that this is not a complete list of coup-contrecoup brain injury symptoms. Always talk to your doctor about any symptoms you have. Moreover, after any traumatic event, consult your doctor.
Signs of a coup-contrecoup brain injury
Sometimes the above serious symptoms aren’t immediately apparent or are not so pronounced. Therefore, other signs of a possible coup-contrecoup brain injury include:
- dilated pupils;
- dizziness;
- vomiting.
If you have any of these symptoms after a traumatic event, seek medical help immediately. In fact it’s strongly recommended to seek medical help after any traumatic event.
Please note that if having dilated pupils, dizziness, and/or vomiting episodes does not mean you have a coup-contrecoup brain injury. However, it’s possible and worth further medical investigation.
Treating a coup-contrecoup brain injury
Modes of treatment will vary according to the severity of the head injury and symptoms. Each course of treatment will vary with respect to types of treatment, duration of treatment, and frequency of treatment.
